Ten Town is a valuable maths resource that can be implemented to suit the requirements of your pupils. Ten Town is not a prescriptive scheme that requires you to follow a rigid plan but instead provides you with the resources to create memorable learning experiences for your children.

Formation & Recognition

One of the key features of Ten Town is that it gives children a reason why each number is formed in a particular way. King One is in charge of Ten Town, and all the other characters either face towards King One or away from him.rnrnFor example, Freddie Four, the explorer, faces away from King One when he goes on adventures to new places.rnrnWhen a character’s story is combined with their rhyme, this helps improve number formation and reduces number reversal.

Number Value

Everything about a Ten Town character relates to their number, so Fiona Five, a Paralympic athlete, eats ﬁve portions of fruit and vegetables every day, and Sir Seven, a knight, looks after seven horses.rnrnNot only do the characters help to develop an understanding of the value of each number, there are also hundreds of ideas for practical activities to help the children apply this knowledge in the real world.

Numbers up to 20

Ten Town also introduces numbers to 20 with an emphasis on number value and placement, as well as incorporating topics such as weight, time, estimating and positional language.

Tia Ten helps children learn about numbers 10 to 20 at the Ten Town Studios.

More than just maths!

The Ten Town characters provide an opportunity for a wide variety of cross-curricular learning. For example, Thelma Three can be used to explore personal, social and emotional development, Freddie Four can help develop an understanding of the world, while Fiona Five can form part of physical development activities.

Revised EYFS Framework

We are currently working on exciting new content to ensure Ten Town is aligned to the new Development Matters document and the revised EYFS framework, when it becomes mandatory in September 2021. Focusing on developing a deeper understanding of the numbers to 10, these will include new activities involving subitising, number bonds and shapes and patterns. Watch this space!
